Summary
The symposium is part of the vast landscape of complex orders, where materials exhibit organisations that exceed conventional crystallographic descriptions. It is structured around the triptych ‘aperiodicity – correlated disorder – local order’, covering all the phenomena that result from it. It will thus focus on the different forms of aperiodicity, whether they be incommensurable modulated structures, composite phases, incommensurable magnetic orders or quasicrystals. At the boundary between classical order and aperiodicity, particular attention will be paid to correlated disorder and to methods of analysing diffuse scattering in diffraction, which are essential for deciphering structural fluctuations beyond the average structure. The session will also address the study of local orders in predominantly crystalline matrices, using a wide range of local probes and complementary analyses such as X-ray absorption, radial distribution functions (PDF), NMR and advanced imaging techniques.
This symposium aims to promote discussions between specialists from different fields with a view to better understanding, modelling and exploiting materials in which disorder, aperiodicity and local structure play a decisive role in understanding structure-property relationships.
