Summary
Understanding systems, from atoms to materials, is advanced by observing their evolution and response to stimuli. Recent advances in X-ray, neutrons, electron techniques now allow real-time observation of electron transfer at femtosecond scales, chromophore changes (e.g., isomerization) at picosecond scales and enzymatic reactions at the millisecond to minute scale. These changes can trigger large-scale protein motions and transform material properties. This microsymposium showcases the diverse science, time scales, and experimental methods used to “film” matter in motion.
